When I was a kid and the Playstation 1 was out I spent a lot of time on it. A game that took up most of my time on it was a game my dad bought me called G-Police.
The game is set in 2097 and according to the introductory sequence gives a back story to the game. In 2057, the depletion of Earth’s resources coincided with widening space exploration. After a catastrophic war over ever-declining resources, ending 10 years prior to the events of G-Police, Earth’s governments were stripped of military power. As a result, powerful corporations had exerted control over Earth and the burgeoning space colonies. The Government Police (G-Police) was formed by Earth’s remaining coalition government to maintain order in these colonies.
G-Police put you as a pilot for in a futuristic vertical take-off and landing aircraft resembling helicopters. You play as Slater, as war veteran who’s sister committed suicide. Slater thinks there was a cover up and his sister was murdered. With failing Governments and corporations taking over corruption is everywhere and according to Slater the G-Police lack authority and “turn a blind eye” to “shady corporate deals” while attempting to maintain order.
I loved playing this game growing up because you were given different sections of a city to fly your Havoc Gunship around in. You would bump into enemies and have dog-fights over the futuristic cities where exhaust vents would belch out flames every now and again. On the Playstation one this looked amazing.
At the start of every mission you loaded out your ship with the weapons that suited your play style best. In 1997 this was amazing for games.
There was also extra missions to select from the main menu where you could practice your flying skills, your fighting skills or just zoom around pretending to blow up everything in front of you.
G-Police is one of the few games that has stuck in my mind for me over the years when I was growing up. It was an influence for my love of Sci-fi now days. If you never played this game or heard it, you might have missed out but if you’re too young to have played it, it was a great game.
